Preface

A look inside the philosophy and purpose of the book.

As Artificial Intelligence takes over many of the analytical functions of work, staying employed depends on your interpersonal and uniquely human skills. The ability to sell yourself and build meaningful relationships are now the most important job skills. This book will show you how to rewire your brain to achieve career security and build these skills in your own life.

With practice, your success will increase as you develop these skills needed to create relationships. In the pages that follow, you will learn how to listen, how to express empathy, and how to build trust. These skills will enable you to develop close relationships across your work, social, and family situations.

"Happiness comes from the number of close relationships in your life. Fame will get you groupies; power attracts fake allies; money does not buy love. How you interact with others and make them feel is the only way to build close relationships."

This book takes you there in three steps:

  1. Our story starts with a discussion about Sales: the art of connecting with other people. First, we dispel six widely-held sales myths and explain why most sales training is actually irrelevant. Then, we identify the behaviors that produce real sales success. Finally, we offer concrete techniques to improve how you sell yourself.
  2. The journey continues with lessons from Neuroscience you can use to elevate your interpersonal skills. The big news is that no matter your age, you can develop new pathways in your brain and strengthen them through deliberate actions. Over time and with continued practice, these skills will become habits and require less effort to perform.
  3. The last part of this book presents easily learned behaviors that will rewire your brain to help build meaningful relationships. Winning in life comes from practicing these skills. Acquiring just a few of them will help your friendships and improve your interviewing. Adding a few more each year will significantly improve your lifetime business and personal success.

By the time you finish this book, your ability to sell yourself and build meaningful relationships will be better. You will know how to improve the way other people react to you. Better yet, you will have a list of activities to practice as you seek life’s great joys of friendship, professional success, and romantic partners.

We are not born knowing how to make friends, be a good spouse, or interview for a job. Luckily, relationship building is a skill we humans can learn. Join us on this exploration of how to strengthen pathways in your brain and start applying the science of sales today.
